First-Time Scholarship Grant for Students from Caswell County

June 9, 2010

Averett has successfully been awarded grant funding in support of North Carolina students. The university recently received a $10,000 grant from the Hillsdale Fund, Inc. to provide annual scholarships to four students from Caswell County. Historically, Hillsdale only funded educational institutions within North Carolina. This is their first venture across state-lines to include a Virginia university for North Carolina students' degree pursuits.

Beginning this fall, four students - from the more than 30 percent who come to Averett from Caswell County, N.C. - will be awarded $2,500 in annual scholarships.

The Hillsdale Fund, Inc. of Greensboro, N.C. was established in 1963 by members of the Lunsford Richardson family. The fund awards grant in a wide variety of areas including the arts, the environment, children and youth, elementary and secondary education, food banks, specialty hospitals and human services. Richardson was the founder of the former Vicks Chemical Company, the manufacturer of Vicks Vapo-Rub.
