Join Us for Founders' Day Jan. 20

January 7, 2011

Averett's Founders' Day, which will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, is a day of celebration and recognition. In honor of this auspicious occasion, the Honorable Charles R. Hawkins, Virginia state senator from 1982-2007, will be the key note speaker on the importance of education leading economic prosperity.

Hawkins donated the papers from his legislative career to the University in October of 2009. The collection includes Hawkins' correspondence, newsletters, speeches, memoranda, newspaper clippings, reports, campaign materials, photographs and other items relating to his 25 years of service in the Virginia General Assembly.

Founders' Day recognizes Averett's faculty and staff members for their years of service at the University.

The University's first Founders' Day celebration was held on March 17, 1987. Former provost Dr. Malcom Huckabee delivered the address that day.
