Cougars Softball Field Beautified

May 6, 2011

Earlier this year, Head Softball Coach Bren West, '98, decided she wanted to give her team a field they could be proud to play on. She decided to seek $10 donations from faculty, staff and the community to plant trees in honor or memory of someone around the field.

Once all of the donations were collected, 98 trees were planted this spring - 73 were placed around the outside of the outfield fence and 25 are planted on the hill above the third base side. For two days - a total of 16 hours - West, with the help of her former assistant, placed a small marker at the base of each tree indicating who it was planted in honor or memory of. They also mulched the trees, which are a type of evergreen commonly known as Green Giant.

Not only do the trees help the field look nicer, they also provide a natural wind screen for the playing area.

Lewis Nursery in Cascade donated several trees and gave the team a great deal on the ones that were purchased.

A special thanks to everyone who made a donation toward this special project.
