FERPA: Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

Averett University upholds FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99). FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds from the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.

The University offers parents an opportunity to access their son or daughter’s records with the student’s permission. To gain access, the student must fill out and submit Averett’s FERPA release form (pdf).

Please return the FERPA form to:
Averett University Registrar’s Office
420 West Main Street
Danville, VA 24541

You can learn more about FERPA on the U.S. Department of Education Web site at http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa.
