From the Dean's Desk
Autumn has always been my favorite season. The cooling temperatures, the changing leaves, and college football are a few reasons I enjoy it so much. The beginning of a new school year, however, is what I love most about the fall. Few things are as rewarding as watching a campus community come together to welcome new and returning students and their families.
As a new staff member at Averett University, I saw first-hand what it is like to be welcomed to the Averett family. It didn’t take long to realize that the kind words and offers of support and guidance were not just a show for someone new. They are indeed part of the everyday interactions on campus. As I participated in opening of school activities, I saw the same graciousness extended to the students and their families.
With the start of classes, everything else college life has to offer comes too — books to read, papers to write, athletic practice, fun student activities and, of course, late night conversations. As your sons and daughters adjust to their lives at Averett, they will likely be in touch with you to celebrate their successes, and share their frustrations. When they do call, and they will, my advice to you is to listen closely, and remember there are people on campus who are here to help them succeed and achieve their academic and leadership goals. Feel free to direct your students to the Office of Student Success, the Galesi Academic Resource Center, or the Writing Center for academic assistance. If they are looking for ways to get involved on campus send them my way (Student Center 424). You can be assured that we are all here to make sure your students’ experiences at Averett are the best they can be.
I look forward to getting to know you and your son or daughter during the coming year.
With Warm Regards,
Bill Woodward
