Transition to College

College will be the most exciting and challenging time in your student’s life. The first year, especially, can be very demanding. This first year will bring about new freedom, new responsibility, and new challenges for your student. Your student will evolve and mature through the coming year. This development does not come without help, however; you will play a vital role in your student’s transition and development over the course of the first year in college.

The information included in this newsletter will help you as you interact with your student through the coming months and will serve as a resource for you as a parent of a new AU Cougar. Know, however, that you are not alone during this time of transition. We are also here to help. If you feel that your student needs additional assistance during the year, encourage him or her to seek out assistance from our Galesi Academic Resource Center. If you feel like your student is struggling with the stress that comes with the first year of college, encourage a visit to our Counseling Center. If you have questions, ask, we are here to help!

Rest assured that this adjustment is a natural process that comes with the first year of college. In the end, your student will grow and develop along with the relationship that you share with him or her. Take some time to review the information included in this newsletter as well as other information that you have received during the summer. Take advantage of opportunities to discuss some of these items with your student. Together we can ensure the success of your student during this first year.
