Captains beat Hornets in shortened game
DANVILLE, Va. - In the second game of the USA South Conference Tournament, the Captains of Christopher Newport University defeated the Shenandoah Hornets by a 14-1 final Friday at Dan Daniel Park. The game was halted after the top of the sixth due to the tournament's mercy rule.
The Hornets were first to strike in the game, scoring a run in the top of the first on a single by David Jenkins, which scored Daniel Ziccardy. However, the rest of the game belonged to the Captains. In the bottom of the second inning, the Shenandoah pitching staff couldn't find the strike zone, and walked plenty of batters in the inning. Christopher Newport scored 10 runs on those six walks, and four hits. The Captains would go on to score four more runs in the game, leaving the final at 14-1.
For the Captains on the day, Ricky Medina went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI's, and Jason Moody was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Also, Captains pitcher Mike Cosby pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits while striking out 12 batters. For Shenandoah, Jenkins was one-for-three with the only Hornet RBI.
Christopher Newport advances to play Friday night at 7:45 PM against Ferrum College, and Shenandoah plays Saturday at 10:00 AM against the loser of game three between Methodist and Greensboro. (Box) |
