Monarchs advance with win over Pride

DANVILLE, Va. - The defending champion Methodist College baseball team took a step towards another title Friday with a 6-5 win over Greensboro College in the USA South Baseball Tournament at Dan Daniel Park.

The Monarchs scored a pair of early runs with one run each in both the first and second innings on RBI hits by Ben Kaplan and Jonathan Spivey. However, the Pride managed to knot the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth on an RBI by Chad Clark. Chad Alligood also scored in the inning on a throwing error.

That lead didn't stand for long, as the Monarchs scored four runs in the bottom half of the fourth for a comfortable 6-2 advantage. Spivey tallied his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice bunt, while Greensboro walked in a second run in the frame to give Methodist a 4-2 advantage. Later in the inning, Kyle Eudy belted a two-RBI single for the 6-2 lead.

The Pride rallied in the top of the eight inning to come within one run of the Monarchs. Alligood had one RBI in the inning and Clark hit a two RBI single to bring the score to what it would be at the final, 5-6.

Methodist plays Saturday at 4:30 PM against the winner of Friday's last game. Greensboro plays at 10:00 on Saturday against the Shenandoah Hornets. (Box)
