Greensboro upends Wesleyan
DANVILLE, Va. - Despite a late N.C. Wesleyan rally, Greensboro College advanced to the tournament semifinals with a 5-4 win over the Bishops at Dan Daniel Park in the USA South Conference Tournament.
Greensboro (20-13) opened the game with an early 4-0 advantage after scoring two runs in both the first and second innings. Taylor Kennedy and Chad Alligood both contributed RBI hits in the frame for an early 2-0 lead after one. That lead increased to 4-0 one inning later on an RBI double by Brent Justice and a Larry Lockhart sacrifice fly.
The teams traded runs in the fourth, with N.C. Wesleyan getting to within 5-3 on an single to center by Brian Massey that plated Ted Williams.
The Bishops rallied for two more on a Brad Gardner double in the top of the ninth, but failed to add the tying run.
Kevin Mong struck out five to improve to 4-2 this spring. Jeremy Morrison, Chad Alligood and Justice each had two hits for the Pride with Justice driving in a pair. Wesleyan was held to five hits on the night with Gardner and Massey each getting a double in four at-bats.
GC opens Sunday play against top-seeded Methodist at 1:00.
NC Wesleyan is eliminated from the tournament and is now 22-17 overall. (Box)
