England's Bat Leads Averett to Win Over Hornets
DANVILLE, Va. - Senior shortstop Chris England was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs Saturday, as the Averett University baseball team defeated Lynchburg College 7-2 at Owen-Fulton Field.
After England scored in the second inning on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead, the Cougars (3-0) added three runs in the fourth inning to extend their advantage to 4-0. Kevin Bundy drew a lead off walk and Ben Rezeli followed with a single to center field. Each runner advanced one base on steals, before England singled to center field to score both base runners. England scored later in the inning on an RBI hit by Jason Inge.
Averett increased the Lynchburg (0-2) deficit to 7-0 with three runs in the seventh. Yost reached on an infield hit with one out, and Bundy followed two batters later with a double down the left field line. Rezeli doubled down the right field line on the next at bat, and was brought home on an England single for the 7-0 Averett advantage.
Meanwhile on the mound, Gene Yost mowed down Hornet batters. He faced no more than four batters an inning and scattered four hits in eight innings of work. Yost also struck out eight in the contest and allowed no runs. Lynchburg scored a pair of ninth inning runs, but was unable to draw closer. Yost improved to 2-0 with the decision.
Following England's offensive effort was Rezeli's 2-for-4 performance, which included two RBIs. Inge also added two hits and one RBI.
For Lynchburg, Shawn Abell and Steven Scott each had two hits for the Hornets. Derek Creger lasted only three innings, while picking up the loss. He gave up three earned runs and four hits.
Averett returns to action on Sunday, as they travel to Guilford College for a 1 p.m. tilt with the Quakers.
