Weather Delays Averett-Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Averett University baseball team ended nine innings of play tied with Guilford College 6-6 at McBane Field Sunday and that was as far as it went. Weather caused the game to be delayed until next Sunday, when the two teams are set to face one another in Danville. The game will pick up in the 10 th inning at 1 p.m., with the regularly scheduled game to follow.

After four scoreless innings, each team added a run in fifth to knot the game at 1-1. However, Guilford opened up a 6-1 lead, as they tallied five runs off of Averett starter Kenny Payne in the seventh. The Quakers scored the five runs on four hits and an error in the inning.

The Cougars answered in the eighth with four runs to trim the deficit to 6-5. After Mike Cassidy drew a walk, singles followed by Eddie Guessford and Kevin Bundy to advance Cassidy to the plate. Ben Rezeli followed with another RBI single to score Guessford and advanced to second on a throwing error. Chris England drew a walk on the next at bat for Averett, as freshman T.J. Bray was sent in to pinch-hit with two outs and the bases loaded.

Bray came through like a veteran with a single to score both Rezeli and Bundy and put Averett within one of the Quakers. Averett reliever Drake Shumate held Guilford hitless in the final two innings, while Averett scored the tying run in the ninth.

Guessford scored Averett's final run on a RBI single by Bundy to knot the game at 6-6 and push the game into extra innings.
