Averett Battles Back to Defeat the Hornets
WINCHESTER, Va. - After falling behind 4-1 after three innings, the Averett University baseball team rallied with a four runs in the fourth and went on to defeat Shenandoah University by a 12-7 final at Bridgeforth Field.
In the fourth, Gene Yost scored on an RBI by Chris England to trim the Averett (7-4, 2-1 USA South) deficit to 4-2. Vondell Johnson added the second RBI in the inning on a groundout, while both Ben Rezeli and J.T. Hyler scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. The four-run inning gave Averett a 5-4 advantage, one they would not relinquish.
The Cougars added three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, and capped off their scoring with a run in the eighth. The Hornets (2-5, 1-2 USA South) managed only three runs in the seventh after scoring four over the first three innings.
Yost, England, and Johnson all had two hits in the contest. Johnson had three RBIs, while England added two. Jon Marr (1-0) was credited with the win in six innings of work, while striking out four. Justin Johnson and Conrad Smith added three strikeouts each in relief.
Averett returns to action on Tuesday when they host Virginia Wesleyan College at 2:30 p.m. at Owen-Fulton Field.
