Stranded Cougars Fall at Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Al. - Despite out hitting Huntingdon College by a 13-12 margin, the Averett University baseball team fell to the Hawks by a 12-3 final Wednesday. The Cougars stranded 12 runners in the contest and committed three errors that led to four Huntingdon runs.

Huntingdon (7-7) scored one run on no hits in the first inning after a pair of walks and a Cougar (10-7) error brought a runner home. The Hawks added two unearned runs in the second inning to increase their lead to 3-0. Averett answered in the fifth with an RBI single by Chris England to score Vondell Johnson, but gained no ground, as Huntingdon added a run in the bottom of the inning for the 4-1 lead after five.

Averett appeared to be making a run in the sixth as Kevin Wells doubled after a Jason Inge walk. Johnson scored Inge on a groundout and Wells later scored on a Mike Cassidy double to draw within 4-3, but once again, the Hawks matched the Cougars with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Huntingdon tacked on six runs in the eighth for the final 12-3 deficit.

Cassidy led the Cougars with three hits, while England, Wells, and Eddie Guessford all added two hits. Jon Marr suffered the loss in five and one third inning of work, giving up six runs, only four earned. He also walked seven and struck out four.
