LaGrange Edges Cougars in Ninth Inning

LAGRANGE, Ga. - Leading 3-2 going into the ninth inning, the Averett University baseball team allowed a pair of runs in the bottom half of the ninth frame in a 4-3 loss to LaGrange College at Cleaveland Field Wednesday.

Averett (10-8), who lost earlier in the day at Huntingdon College, scored a run in the second inning for a 1-0 advantage early in the contest. Kevin Bundy led off the inning with a double down the right field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and was brought home by a sacrifice fly by Chris England.

The Cougars pushed their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth. Eddie Guessford walked and Yost was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. They each advanced one bag on a groundout and Guessford came home on the next at bat on a wild pitch. Following an England walk, Kevin Wells brought Yost to the plate with a fielder's choice. However, an error in the bottom half of the fourth allowed two LaGrange (8-5) runs to cut the Cougar advantage to 3-2.

Averett managed only five hits, and committed as many errors in the contest. Guessford had two of those hits, including his sixth double of the season. Bundy had three hits, including two doubles increasing his season total to nine.

Conrad Smith pitched five innings and allowed two runs, none earned. Brandon Vaughan was given the loss in three and one third innings of work, allowing two runs.

Averett returns to action on Thursday with a 7 p.m. match-up at Piedmont College in Demorest, GA.
