Marlins Upend Averett

NORFOLK, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College amassed 18 hits Wednesday, as the Marlins defeated Averett University’s baseball team by a 14-3 final at Marlins Field.

The score was tied at 2-2 after three innings, before Virginia Wesleyan (17-5) opened up with five runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, and four in the sixth. Averett (16-17) scored one run in the fifth for the 14-3 margin.

The Cougars threw five different pitchers at the Marlins, who are ranked ninth in the nation. Jason Inge, Eddie Guessford, and Mike Cassidy all had two hits for the Cougars.

Averett returns to action on Saturday with a double header against conference foe Chowan College. First pitch is slated for noon.
