Stevens Helping Gateway’s Cause in Frontier League

GATEWAY, Ill. – Former Averett University catcher and assistant baseball coach Greg Stevens went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while leading the Gateway Grizzlies of the independent Frontier League to a 7-0 win over the Chillicothe Paints Tuesday.

Stevens, a two-time all-conference selection with the Cougars, hit his eighth double of the season in the contest and reached base five times. His offensive performance pushed him up to a .281 average on the season. Furthermore, Stevens leads the team with 19 RBIs and ranks third on the squad with five home runs on the year. His 17 walks is also tops on the team.

A catcher for most of his collegiate career, Stevens made the transition to third base in professional ball and has helped the Grizzlies to a 17-14 record this season. Gateway is currently only four games out of first place in the Frontier League’s Western Division. Stevens has played in 30 of the team’s 31 games.
