Averett selects Talbert to head women’s soccer and lacrosse programs
DANVILLE, VA. – Director of Athletics Charles S. Harris named Katie Talbert, a former soccer standout at George Washington High School, head women’s soccer and lacrosse coach at Averett University Wednesday. She replaces Kelly Gregory, who resigned last April.
“I am delighted to have Katie join our team,” Harris said. “Her background displays a true balance of scholarship and athleticism. Katie epitomizes the type of student-athlete we aspire to produce at Averett. She also has a tremendous amount of local connections, as a Danville native. I am looking forward to our women’s soccer and lacrosse teams breaking new ground under her leadership.”
Talbert is a 2000 graduate of George Washington High School, where she served as captain of the women’s soccer team, volleyball team, and cheerleading squad. She was honored as the Danville Register & Bee’s Student-Athlete of the Year in 2000. Additionally, Talbert played in the East-West All Star Games in Hampton, VA in 2000.
Following high school, Talbert went on to play three seasons of varsity soccer at Pfeiffer University. She also played on the lacrosse team and was a varsity cheerleader for men’s basketball. In 2003, Talbert was awarded the Dr. Fred West Scholar-Athlete of the Year award after excelling both on the field and in the classroom.
“I am looking forward to bringing my Division II playing experience into the program and giving the department and the teams as much success as possible,” Talbert said. “There is nothing holding the women’s soccer and lacrosse teams from succeeding, and I am appreciative of Mr. Harris for this wonderful opportunity. I am also looking forward to giving back to a Danville community that has given me so much.”
During the 2003-2004 school year, Talbert was employed as an eighth grade math and science teacher at Northern Middle School in Person County, NC. She was Northern Middle’s head women’s soccer coach in 2004, and also served as head junior varsity cheerleading coach at Person County High School last season.
A four-time member of the Dean’s List, Talbert graduated from Pfeiffer in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. She currently resides in Chatham, VA.
