Captains Shoot Past Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's soccer team out-shot Averett 45-1, as the Captains cruised to an 8-1 win over the Cougars at the Cougar Den Sunday.

CNU (7-5, 4-1 USA South) scored their first goal in the game's 6th minute on a Heather Dennee goal off of a Lindsay Lee assist. Less than 90 seconds later Shannon Crane scored an unassisted goal to increase the lead over Averett (4-11, 1-6 USA South) to 2-0.

The Captains scored their third unanswered goal in the 21st minute on a Paniz Asgari goal from Allison Burr-Miller's assist. It wasn't until 24:05 into the contest when Averett netted their first and only goal of the match.

Averett's Suzanne Walat ran down an errant CNU pass to create a 1-on-1 situation with the Captains' goalie. CNU keeper Carola Reigner left the net and fouled Walat in the box.

Dee Moyer took Averett's penalty kick and scored her 13th goal of the season to cut the CNU lead to 3-1. However, the Captains added three more goals before the first half ended and tacked on a pair of second half goals for the final 8-1 margin.

Crane had two goals for the Captains, while six others had one goal each. Burr-Miller had a pair of assists in the contest.

Lindsay Robertson made 13 saves in the match for Averett, while facing all 45 shots.

The Cougars return to action on Thursday when they host Mary Baldwin College at 3 p.m.
