Sweet Briar Drops Cougars in Season Opener BLUEFIELD, Va. - The Averett University women's soccer team dropped their season opener Friday by a 3-1 final to Sweet Briar College in the Bluefield College Women's Soccer Invitational. Although the Cougars (0-1) did not manage to claim a victory, head coach Kelly Gregory said the team was making strides toward meeting team goals. One of those goals were to create more offside traps for their opponents and they tallied 10 of those Friday. The lone Cougar goal came off of Lindsay Robertson's foot. Julie Pope fed Dee Moyer, who found an open Robertson for Averett's only goal. Cougar goalkeeper Sheila Nichols had 12 saves in the loss. Averett will return to action in the tournament's consolation match on Saturday. The Cougars will play Bluefield at 12 noon. |
