Cougars Defeat Ferrum in Conference Opener

DANVILLE, Va. - Averett University midfielder Lindsay Robertson scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, during Averett's 3-2 victory over Ferrum in the USA South Conference opener for both teams Saturday at the North Campus.

Robertson put Averett (3-3, 1-0 USA South) on the board first in the game's 23 rd minute on a breakaway down the center of the field. After dribbling around a pair of Panther (1-5-1, 0-1 USA South) defenders, Robertson riddled Ferrum goalie Megan Goodman with a shot in the lower right hand corner of the net for a 1-0 Cougar advantage.

The Panthers tied the contest at 1-1 13 minutes later on a Jennifer Phillips unassisted score, but Averett's Dee Moyer put the Cougars up 2-1 before halftime with a successful penalty-kick. Moyer took the kick after Robertson was fouled in the penalty area.

Robertson scored the game-winning goal early in the second half thanks to Moyer's assist and Robertson's solid shot placement. Moyer found Robertson open in the middle of the goalie box, as Robertson proceeded to loft the shot over the Panther defenders and into the goal. Leah Austin added another Ferrum score from Danielle Newbill's assist, but the Panthers were unable to score a third goal and tie the match.

Sheila Nichols had eight saves as the Cougars goalkeeper, while Goodman had eight saves for the Panthers.

Averett returns to action on Sunday at 3 p.m. when they host Meredith College at Averett's North Campus.
