Angels Tame Cougars

DANVILLE, Va. - The Averett University women's soccer team was defeated by Meredith College by a 9-1 final Sunday at the Averett North Campus.

Meredith (6-2) scored early in the contest thanks to a shot by Annie Palmquist. Margot Childs found Palmquist on a corner kick, who went on to send it across the goal line for a 1-0 Angels advantage.

Averett (3-4) answered the goal 20 seconds later when Dee Moyer deflected a shot off of the Meredith defense into the net to knot the game at 1-1. However, the Cougars didn't manage to get another shot off as the Angels controlled the remainder of the contest.

Meredith scored four first half goals to take a 4-1 halftime lead. Katie Fuller found the net; Palmquist added her second goal of the match, and Marci Strathmeyer scored on Erin Cooper's assist. In the second half, Courtney Barefoot netted a goal, as did Ashley Ellis. Mallory Hancock scored twice, and Strathmeyer completed the Angel scoring with her second goal of the contest.

Averett goalkeeper Shelia Nichols had 11 saves in the contest, while Moyer scored her ninth goal of the season.

Averett returns to conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Methodist College.
