Peace Trips-up Cougars
DANVILLE, Va. - Peace College's Laura Johnson scored on an assist by Eileen Lazorchick in the match's 20th minute for the only goal of the contest during a 1-0 Pride victory over Averett University at the Cougar Den on Friday.
Peace (1-4, 1-1 USA South) won their first USA South Conference contest in the program's history, as 2003 marks their first year of affiliation with the conference. The pride out-shot the Cougars (3-6, 1-2 USA South) by a 23-6 margin in the match. The goal was Johnson's first of the year.
Averett threatened the net many times in the second half, but came away empty-handed with each effort. With five minutes remaining in the contest, it looked as though the Cougars were to create a tie. Peace goalkeeper Amy Schneider was called for a foul, which granted Averett an indirect kick. After a touch by Cougar forward Julie Pope, Dee Moyer fired a shot that just missed high, allowing Peace to return to the offensive.
Shelia Nichols had 10 saves in the match for Averett. Scheneider added a pair of saves for Peace.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday when they host the Knights from Southern Virginia University at 4 p.m.
