Assistant or Associate Professor of Musical Theatre

Position Description

Averett University is seeking qualified applicants for a faculty position in the Theatre Department. This is a  full-time 9 month faculty position with teaching and production responsibilities. Requires flexible work hours including some weekends. Responsibilities include; teaching Musical Theatre courses, introduction to theatre courses, and other courses as needed; directing 2 productions a year, attending open houses , orientations and recruiting for the BFA degree, academic advising, participating in productions that you are not directing, and being a mentor for the majors in the Theatre department. Salary commensurate with experience.

Qualifications include:

  • Masters or Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre or 6 or more years of professional experience at the Broadway level required.
  • Experience directing at the University or professional level.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, have an extensive Musical Theatre background and be able to work well in a collaborative team.
  • Valid Driver’s License

Duties include:

  • Teaching Musical Theatre courses.
  • Perform academic advising.
  • Direct a Musical and one other production per academic year.
  • Participate in all Theatre department productions.
  • Coach and mentor Musical Theatre students.
  • Recruit BFA majors for Theatre Department.
  • Attend open houses and orientations.

Physical & Mental Demands/Work Environment

The duties of this position require performance of the following activities and work in the described environment, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Almost constant interaction with others requiring clear communication (speaking, hearing, and listening)
  • Visual, speech, and hearing acuity required to perform assigned work, including reading music, determining proper vocalizations, conducting in-person interactions with students, faculty members, and staff; making presentations; and teaching and advising students
  • Much work is performed while standing or walking
  • Work uses fine manual dexterity to use equipment involving levers, buttons, keyboards, and switches as well as frequent handling of small items and paperwork
  • Ability to lift, carry or move items of up to 25 pounds, occasionally, notes, files, binder, displays, documents
  • At times, work may require pushing/pulling (drawers, chairs), reaching, bending, twisting, or climbing (stairs)
  • Regularly will need to work under time pressure, work on multiple tasks simultaneously, perform exacting work, and work in a noisy or distracting environment
  • May be called upon to make frequent changes of tasks, or work an irregular work schedule/overtime
  • Frequently will need to use office equipment such as telephones, printer, copier, scanner, scissors, stapler, and computer.  Will use software including Microsoft Office, Foxit or Adobe PDF software, Moodle or Canvas, Zoom, PC Self-Service, and theatre-related software
  • Primary work locations are in auditoriums, classrooms, and educational facilities
  • Travel will be required throughout the eastern US as needed to attend conferences and to recruit students.
