GPS Student Spotlight

Meet Brittany Owens, a student pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Criminal Justice degree who is expected to graduate in 2018. To see her on the GPS blog, click here.

QUESTION: What is your motivation for obtaining your degree?

ANSWER: “I heard about Averett’s GPS program through my profession two years before I decided to look into it. I was unsure about going back to school and even more unsure of whether or not I wanted to obtain a degree in criminal justice or something else. All of my doubts about the school and my ability to succeed at Averett were erased almost instantly the moment I began to interact with the staff and professors. Every single person among the Averett staff was beyond helpful and believed fully in their students, and belief is one of the most important things in life. I felt as if they already believed in me when they did not know me and I was unsure of myself and in return, it allowed me to believe in myself. You cannot find this magic just anywhere, and it is important to hold onto it when you do find it.”

Averett: From the Eyes of Freshmen

During every Averett 101 class each fall semester, the students go to the president’s house and enjoy a dinner with Dr. Franks and her husband, Joe. During that time, Dr. Franks asks the students what they love about Averett and if they have any concerns. During this spring semester, we will be sharing some of those positive comments with you. Enjoy!

“The events around campus make it easy to meet people.”

“Spirit during homecoming week.”

“Resources are close – you don’t have to walk far.”

“I like being away from home in a good environment.”

“I’m from Danville so I can show my new friends what it has to offer.”

“I like that freshmen can have cars.”

The Averett University Retirement Plan

Averett University is excited to announce to our employees that we have joined with thirteen other member institutions from the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) to establish a single retirement plan with multiple “adopting employers” called a 403(b) Multiple Employer Plan (MEP).

The Human Resources Committee (HRC) has supported the move to an MEP from its inception and continues to support the University’s transition to a single retirement plan in 2019.

Please read the letter provided by clicking here for additional information. Questions concerning the transition can be emailed to Kathie Tune, director of human resources, at [email protected].
