autism_awarenessApril Is Autism Awareness Month

April is such an important time in the world of autism. A special thank you to those who either attended or helped with the 2nd Annual Autism Awareness Expo and/or the Light It Up Blue on 4/2 event(s)!

If you missed those, no worries! There are more opportunities to grow in your knowledge and awareness of autism in April. Tomorrow (Thursday, April 9) from 6-8 p.m. in the multipurpose room there will be a Sensory Experience Lab in which participants will be able to see what everyday tasks might be like for individuals with sensory processing difficulties. Then, toward the end of April, you can participate in the Dan River Autism Awareness 5K on Saturday, April 25 at Angler’s Park. For more information about the 5K, visit www.danriverautism5K.org.

As promised, listed below are seven more facts about autism spectrum disorders to assist the AU community in becoming more aware of this complex disorder.

  1. From the Greek, autos, meaning “self,” autism literally means “alone.”
  2. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder, yet most underfunded.
  3. Autism is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined.
  4. Autism now affects 1:68 children and 1:42 boys.
  5. Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with autism.
  6. Children who have a sibling with autism are at a higher risk of also having autism.
  7. Autism affects all nationalities, all creeds, all religions and all races. It does not differentiate.
