Averett Success

More exciting plans for our recent alumni. Congratulations to:

coleman_andrewAndrew Coleman ’16 who just graduated with a degree in physical education: wellness and sports medicine. He has accepted an internship with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as their strength and conditioning coach. Andrew played football and is from Concord.

 

sharpe_melodyMelody Sharpe ’16 has accepted a working student position with Cindy Sydnor of Braeburn Farm in Snow Camp, N.C. She will be taking care of the horses and facilities. Melody graduated with a bachelor of science degree in equine management. She also played flute in the Averett band. She is from Liberty, N.C.

 

looney_hayleyHayley Looney ’16 who has been accepted into Virginia Tech’s master’s program in curriculum and instruction in elementary education. This program only selects 25 applicants nationwide every year. Hayley majored in biology: biomedical science and minored in psychology. She was a cheerleader, member of Kappa Delta Alpha, volunteered with multiple organizations, helped teach cheer and dance and won the 2016 AU Service Award for Cheerleading. She will graduate from VT in 2017.

AT_seniorSeniors Pass Board Certification

Three recent graduates of the athletic training program all took, and passed, the Board of Certification exam to become certified athletic trainers (giving the program a 100 percent pass rate)!

Alicia Carey, Brian Benitez and Rhyan Scearce graduated not only with a degree from Averett, but also with ATC after their name. In addition, the trio comprised our inaugural Quiz Bowl team for the VATA this year and came in second place!

Brian Benitez, who is from Miami, Fla., has accepted a graduate assistant athletic trainer position here at Averett starting in the fall. He will pursue his MBA.

Rhyan Scearce, who is from Danville, has accepted a graduate assistant athletic trainer position at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.

Alicia Carey, from Williamsburg, will pursue her master’s degree.

Our Intercollegiate Dressage Team (IDA) was named the 2016 National Reserve Champion last month. Congratulations again ladies!

staff_council1Nominations for Staff Council

We will be voting at the Thursday, May 19 university-wide staff meeting for three new staff members to sit on Staff Council. If you have someone you would like to nominate, please send their name to Sandy Bash. Ballots will be handed out at the meeting.

bookstoreBookstore Summer Hours

The Schoolfield House Booksellers is beginning its summer hours, which are as follows: Monday – Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and closed Saturday and Sunday. The bookstore will be open Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 as well as Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17 for new student orientation.

Summer is quickly approaching and we are preparing for new student orientation in June and July. On June 25 and July 16 from 12:15 p.m.-1:30 p.m., we need faculty and staff volunteers to mingle and eat lunch with the parents of our new students.
