Since the fall, the Student Life Department has been recognizing students who go the extra mile in whatever they are doing on campus. Each week during Student Life Staff meetings, staff members nominate students whose dedication to the university they want to recognize. Students are notified about the recognition and informed of their chance to win a $50 Visa gift card at the end of the semester. This week’s nominees are Allie Crouse, Hannah Glover, Kamihla Preston, Michael Williams, Alex Redmon, Ebony Strother and Ashley Jones.

2015engage_awardsInaugural Engagement Symposium

On Tuesday, April 28, the CCECC hosted Averett’s Inaugural Engagement Symposium. Seventeen groups of students from Averett, DCC, and PCC showcased their work related to service-learning, volunteerism and internships.

Awards were presented to one faculty member and one student from each institution to honor their engagement efforts. Averett’s recipients were Dr. Susan Huckstep and Moustafa “Moose” Ahmed Nassar.

The CCECC looks forward to the next symposium in April 2016!

thankyouThank You!

I want to thank all of my Averett family for your thoughts, cards, hugs, emails, and just for being who you are. Averett has been my second family for a long time and has never felt more so than when I lost my brother recently. It is hard to say what all of you mean to me, but I can say, thank you with all my heart.

Peggy Wright, Professor of Business Administration

pearce_carlyPearce Takes on New Role

Carly Pearce has accepted the position of Director of GPS Student Success. This was a great opportunity to promote one of Averett’s own — a leader with proven success.

In her new role, Carly will lead the GPS Student Success team after serving as Averett’s Women’s Head Soccer Coach and as an Athletics Administrator. Carly has demonstrated exemplary leadership, optimism and collaborative skills. Her career in higher education also includes working with students and focusing on improving the student experience, traits this position requires. An additional strength that Carly brings is her expertise in Life Skills. She’s cultivated teams, colleagues (and beyond) with skills that will help with the growth and development of her team and our GPS students. As you see Carly around campus please congratulate, and welcome, her to the GPS team!

booksBook Discussions

As we all look forward to summer reading, please consider sharing your favorite title with colleagues, students and community members in a 2015-16 book discussion. The Cathy Edwards Literary Fund will provide an honorarium for discussion leaders. Discussions must be open to the public and can occur in one or multiple sessions at times convenient for each leader and group. Averett students, faculty, staff and community members are welcome to lead these discussions. Per Buddy Rawley, the books don’t have to be academic, they can just be for fun! To recommend a title or request more information, contact Jim Verdini, Humanities Librarian, at 434-791-5694 or email him at [email protected].
