On the first Thursday of every month, any and all service-learning enthusiasts are invited to brainstorm, share, and discuss service-learning best practices during a Service-Learning Brain Pick-nic. These events will be held in the bookstore sunroom (or on the porch on very nice days). The first Service-Learning Brain Pick-nic is tomorrow (June 4) from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Please bring your lunch and join us for an interesting discussion!

For our first topic, Feleta Morton and Brigid Belko will go through a values-based activity with everyone. It will be fun, and you can use it in your class, too!

Wilbur_retiresStar AU Horse Retires, Rides Off Into Sunset

For 15 years, he was the beloved workhorse of Averett’s Equestrian Studies program, an integral part of over 2,000 lessons for approximately 300 riders. He also participated in at least 60 horse shows, and was named the “High Scoring Horse of the Show” at several Intercollegiate Dressage Association shows.

On May 29, the horse fondly known as “Wilbur” (a.k.a. Freeunion Rocket Redglare) rode off into the sunset after being honored in a special retirement celebration held at our Equestrian Center. In attendance were several Averett students, faculty members and administrators, and Dr. Franks delivered some poignant remarks. Retired Equestrian Studies Professor Jane Faulkner, who was responsible for bringing Wilbur to Averett in 2000, was also honored for her 26 years of service to Averett during the ceremony. Wilbur will be enjoying his retirement at Faulkner’s farm in Michigan.
