dale_jewelJewel Dale ’15, who joins the team at the Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness (CCECC) as the 2015-16 AmeriCorps VISTA Member. Her work will focus on community engagement efforts across the region.

Jewel graduated from Averett this spring with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Management: Aviation Business. While at Averett, Jewel served as a Building Manager, Orientation Leader, Peer Advisor and Office Assistant, all in the Office of Student Life. She also worked in the Admissions Office as a Student Ambassador. Please welcome Jewel back to Averett!

Dr. Sergey Samoilenko, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Systems, published a paper in “Journal of Global Information Technology Management,” Volume 18, Issue 2, 2015, that was titled “Before and After Joining the European Union: The Impact of Investments in Telecoms on the Visegrád Group of Countries and Baltic States.” To access the article, click here.

In a little more than three weeks, our first group of students will be returning to campus and moving in. It will be great to see the campus come to life again! While we’re looking forward to welcoming new and returning students to campus, we’re also excited to have the full Averett family back together again.

All faculty and staff will gather Thursday, Aug. 13 for our annual opening festivities. Following is the schedule for the day:

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Lunch Buffet, Dining Hall

12:30-1 p.m. – Dessert, Lobby of the Violet T. Frith Fine Arts Center

1-2 p.m. – Opening Session for all faculty and staff, Pritchett Auditorium, Frith Fine Arts Center

2:15-3:15 – Preparing for Upcoming SACSOC Reaffirmation Process (for Faculty and Leadership Forum), Pritchett Auditorium

4-6 p.m. – Reception for faculty/staff, spouses and guests, hosted by Tiffany and Joe Franks, President’s Home (500 Hawthorne Drive)

Faculty, please note you will be receiving a mailing from Dr. Tim Fulop that will provide you with the complete schedule and additional opening information. All new faculty and staff, you will receive information from Kathie Tune, Director of Human Resources, with information about a special orientation for you on Wednesday, Aug. 12. You will also be officially welcomed and pinned at the Opening Session Aug. 13.

bingoBingo Bash

Staff Council is sponsoring an end of the year Bingo Bash for all faculty and staff. It will be in the multipurpose room of the Student Center on Wednesday, July 22 from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. We will supply drinks and chips and there will be lots of prizes for the winners. Come out and have fun!

poetry_projectPoetry Project Dan River Region

The Poetry Project Dan River Region will be on campus in September! Josephus Thompson of The Poetry Project in Greensboro, N.C. will be hosting workshops with our students to help them develop their own spoken word poems. This is a regional project funded by a Make More Happen! Grant from the Danville Regional Foundation. It will culminate with an Arts@Averett Series event Oct. 1.

HealthSavings Administrators has appointed a new custodian for your health savings account (HSA). At their request, HSA Bank, a division of Webster Bank, N.A., will terminate its deposit account agreement with you. Your HSA will be transferred to the newly appointed custodian, FPS Trust Company, LLC, effective September 1. If you object to the transfer to FPS Trust for any reason, you may opt out before August 7. If you opt out and choose to stay with HSA Bank, your account will be converted to an individual HSA.

They’ve made this change easy for you! There are no forms to sign or return. If you did not receive an email from HealthSavings Administrators noting the change, please contact them as soon as possible.

Josephus Thompson of the Poetry Project has been conducting spoken word workshops with the Boys & Girls Club this summer. (Thompson will be working with our students on a similar endeavor starting in September – see above announcement.) On Thursday, July 30 from 6-8 p.m., the Club’s youth will showcase their poems to the community at an event called The Cypher. The Cypher will be held at the Boys & Girls Club’s Foster Street location.
