It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye

suviSad but true, Suvi Piipponen is leaving Averett after six years for greener mountain pastures. Coming to Averett as a freshman from Finland, Suvi had a stellar academic and athletics career leading the Cougars to women’s soccer championships. She led the Mascots, conducted research in Institutional Research, completed her MBA and joined Averett’s staff as our camps and events coordinator for the past year. Suvi will be the new student life event coordinator at Sewanee University in Tennessee. Her last day with us will be Friday, Sept. 9, so please drop by Alumni Hall over the next few days to wish her well.

Meg Stevens Presented at Virginia Tech

stevens_megDirector of Athletics Meg Stevens spoke to a group of freshmen student-athletes at Virginia Tech on Saturday, Aug. 20. She encouraged them to make the most of their rare opportunity to play collegiate sports at the Division I level. Over the past three years at Averett, Meg has been the keynote speaker at several regional and national events in the collegiate sports industry at various levels. Thank you, Meg, for continuing to represent Averett well.

Alumni Success Stories

honors_recognitionMartin Erenstedt, ’13, athletic training graduate from Gothenburg, Sweden, has been accepted into the University of Gothenburg’s physical therapy school. While at Averett, Martin played soccer for four years and was an integral part of the athletic training education program.

Nicole Garcia, ’16, athletic training graduate from Miami, took and passed the Board of Certification Exam to become a Certified Athletic Trainer, continuing the program’s 100 percent pass rate. She is attending physical therapy school in Florida.

Congratulations, Martin and Nicole!

Student Accolades

Last fall, the Student Life department began recognizing students that go the extra mile in whatever they are doing on campus. Each week, the staff meets to select students for recognition for their dedication to Averett, and they are notified they’ve been nominated for a chance to win a $50 Visa Gift Card. At the end of the semester, we put all the names in a bowl and draw the name of one lucky student. This is our way to let the students know we appreciate all that they do.

This week, we would like to recognize the four football captains – Terrence Owens, Michael Barbour, Jake Comer and KJ Covington – for their help on campus, and also thanks to Tevin Perry, Zachary Kidd, Christian Hester, Paige Robbins, Jessica Allanson and Nick Brown.
