Sacred Heart School in Danville came to the Averett University campus on Wednesday, Sept. 9, as it hosted a plaque dedication to recognize the location of the humble beginnings of the school.
The dedication featured remarks from Sacred Heart pastor, Father Anthony Senyah, and the school’s principal, Matthew Weatherford. In attendance was the school’s eighth grade class, which will graduate in 2027, as well as members of the faculty and staff and alumni of the school, some who actually attended class in the Carriage House. Also in attendance were members of the Averett University faculty and staff.
The Carriage House is the last remaining building of the original Sacred Heart School in Danville. Founded in 1953, the school opened its doors to 67 students, and the Carriage House housed the middle school (grades 6-8). In 1959, the school became the first school in Danville to be integrated, forging the way to desegregation and civil rights in our community. The main building was located on the land that now holds the Mary B. Blount Library at 344 West Main Street.
