Meet Penny Nunnally, a student pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree who is expected to graduate in 2018.

QUESTION: What is your motivation for obtaining your degree?

ANSWER: “I realize that in today’s healthcare, one must have a BSN in order to be able to progress in most areas of nursing. I have had the experience of being laid off and had a difficult time finding the type of nursing job that I preferred. I realized that if I had a BSN, I would have been more marketable.”

Averett: From the Eyes of Freshmen

During every Averett 101 class each fall semester, the students go to the president’s house and enjoy a dinner with Dr. Franks and her husband, Joe. During that time, Dr. Franks asks the students what they love about Averett and if they have any concerns. During this spring semester, we will be sharing some of those positive comments with you. Enjoy!

“I love the Equestrian program and the riding – we can show all year long.”

“In Aviation, we are flying within the first week.”

“Dr. Hanbury has had an impact on me, I want to minor is developmental psychology now.”

“The Nursing facility is high-tech and hands-on.”

“The Theatre professors are top-notch.”

“It’s like a close family – I can go to my professors to get help.”

The Great American Trailer Park Musical

Averett’s Theatre Department presents “The Great American Trailer Park Musical.” The play explores the relationships between the tenants at the Armadillo Acres Trailer Park in Florida, particularly between Pippi, “the stripper on the run,” the Dr. Phil-loving agoraphobic Jeannie, and Jeannie’s tollbooth-collector husband, Norbert. It’s a raucous, good fun, good time.

The play runs Thursday, Apr. 5 through Saturday, Apr. 7, at 7 p.m. each night and on Sunday, Apr. 8, at 2 p.m. in Pritchett Auditorium. Averett students get in free, and faculty and staff get two free tickets. All other tickets are $10 adults, $8 students/senior citizens (60+).

ERT Updates

The Emergency Response Team (ERT) conducted a campus safety walk at the end of the fall semester, and identified a number of improvements that could be made to make Main Campus a safer place for all. Since that time, the Facilities team has addressed over a dozen items from the list, including repairing doors and hand railings that were broken, and repairing and replacing outside lights around Blount Chapel, Carrington Gym, Davenport Hall, Frith Hall, Fugate Hall, Main Hall, Pritchett Auditorium, the Student Center and the Student Success Center. The team will conduct four safety walks a year, and is working to schedule them at North and Riverview campuses, as well. Facilities will continue working on the remaining items on the list.

Additionally, the ERT has purchased locking mechanisms to be installed in 10 classrooms upon arrival, and additional ones will be ordered at the beginning of the next fiscal year to complete the inventory of classrooms that do not lock from the inside. This will allow for all classrooms to be locked in case of an urgent situation, like an active shooter scenario. As a reminder, materials and the video from the Faculty/Staff Active Shooter Training presentation last semester are available here.
