He is a 1973 graduate of Hampton University, and was chosen because of his career accomplishments and his support of the university. Congratulations, Charles, on this well-deserved recognition!

Director of Galesi Center

We are pleased to welcome Erin Schlauch as the director of the Galesi Center. Erin comes to us from Danville Community College where she currently serves as a Student Success Coach. Before relocating to Danville with her family, Erin was the director of the Barbara C. Baxter Learning Success Center at Arkansas State University Mid-south. We are excited to bring Erin to Averett so she can share her wealth of knowledge in student support with our community!

Saying Goodbye

Rachel Covington, assistant director of community engagement at the CCECC, has accepted another position as the director of member services at the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. Her last day with Averett will be this Friday, May 18. Rachel joined the University in December 2014 and has greatly contributed to community engagement and volunteerism among our students, faculty and staff.

If you would like to say goodbye and give Rachel your well wishes, please stop by the CCECC tomorrow, May 17, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Congratulations, Rachel!

Meet Angela Wilcher, a student pursuing her Bachelor of Business Administration degree who is expected to graduate in 2019.

QUESTION: What is your motivation for obtaining your degree?

ANSWER: “My motivation for earning my degree comes from my mother. At my age (35), she was raising two children and working just like I am. I decided when I had my daughter that I wanted to better myself and create a solid foundation for my little girl. I had made several attempts at getting a degree and failed. I was determined this time would be different. I started out by earning my general studies and decided I wanted to build on my experience in management. This is when I decided I wanted to go above retail and restaurant management, so I decided on human resources. My kids and my husband keep me motivated to reach my goal of finally walking across the stage and getting my degree.”

Staff Meeting Today!

The May Staff Meeting is today, May 16, at 11:15 a.m. in the multipurpose room. Please join us for departmental announcements, the new staff council members and the golden bagel winner for the month of May!

Congratulations to Kyle Patterson, director of the Office of Housing and Residence Life, the Golden Bagel winner for the month of April. Remember, you can nominate a fellow staff member who you feel has gone above and beyond. Please send all Golden Bagel nominations to [email protected].

Network Outage

Tomorrow, May 17, and possibly on Friday, May 18, although we would love to avoid it, we must do an administrative network switch of vendors and it has to be a weekday. During this time, the administrative side of the network will have no internet access at all. The student side will be fine, but this will affect anything that relies on internet traffic.

Normally, we would advise working from home for somewhere that has internet access. This will not work in this case because no one will be able to access our network from the outside. All Danville campuses will be affected.
