Averett University Partners to Provide Opportunities for Service and Discussion around MLK Day

Averett University is partnering to host several events this Sunday and Monday, Jan. 20-21, to celebrate and honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Sunday, Jan. 20, the National Bonner Leaders are hosting Averett’s Sunday Supper: “Seeing Past Appearances” from 3-5 p.m. in the multipurpose room on the second floor of the Student Center, 351 Townes St. America’s Sunday Supper is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of people of diverse backgrounds interacting on personal levels. At this event, Averett students, faculty and staff will join other members of the Averett family for dinner and a facilitated discussion. The discussion will be centered around diversity and equality, and how these issues affect our daily lives. Please RSVP by clicking here.

Also on Sunday, Jan. 20, there will be another Sunday Supper at the Salvation Army. America’s Sunday Supper: “Growth through Sacrifice” will be hosted by the Center for Community Engagement & Career Competitiveness & History United from 3–5 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 123 Henry Street, Danville, Va. All community members are encouraged to attend. There will be Averett representatives present as well. There is no cost to attend but an RSVP is required. You can RSVP by clicking here.

On Monday, Jan. 21, there are several MLK Day of Service opportunities for Averett students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to volunteer. Visit www.serve365.org for service opportunities.

All are welcome to choose from below:

  1. Warehouse sorting and organizing at God’s Pit Crew, 132 Parkland Dr., from 9 a.m. until noon or 1-3 p.m.
  2. Notes of Encouragement for God’s Pit Crew Blessing Buckets at Averett University’s Student Center in the back café on the third floor, 351 Townes St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  3. Family Store sorting and organizing at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, 2905 Riverside Dr., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Monday night, Averett is hosting the 2nd Annual Tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. with guest speaker Torrey Dixon, Averett alumnus and assistant attorney general of the N.C. Department of Justice. The 2nd Annual Tribute will take place in the back café on the third floor of the Student Center, 351 Townes St., from 7-9 p.m. There is no cost to attend.
