Averett University today announced a new partnership with Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) to provide a student health and wellness center on Averett’s main campus, as well as a partnership with Danville Family YMCA for a new fitness center option for students, faculty and staff.

Renovations to reconstruct Averett’s current student fitness center into the health and wellness center will start this month. The project is expected to be complete and open to students in January 2017. The 1,500 square-foot space within Averett’s Galesi Family Student Success Center at 141 Woodland Drive on Averett’s historic main campus in Danville, will include a lobby and reception area, two exam rooms, and the health and wellness office. Services of the clinic, exclusive to Averett students, will include wellness checks, sick visits, physicals, immunizations and routine lab work. Blair Construction Company will oversee design and construction of the project.

This center was made possible from a portion of a gift from an anonymous donor, from which the university was also able to add three new athletics programs – men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s wrestling.

“We are thrilled to offer these new amenities to our students, which will help them maintain their health and wellbeing in a convenient, upgraded location,” said Dr. Tiffany M. Franks, President of Averett University. “Our community partners and donors are so valuable to us, and without them, none of this would be possible.”

DRMCDr. Jennie Emery, Chief Family Medicine Resident at DRMC, along with DRMC nurses will provide care in the clinic. DRMC will also handle all billing and insurance processing.

“This partnership builds upon the strong commitment DRMC has maintained in the community for more than 130 years,” said Alan Larson, Market President and DRMC Chief Executive Officer. “We feel privileged to collaborate with Averett in such a meaningful way, while at the same time ensuring our mission of making our community healthier. In providing these services, we hope it will give Averett students a competitive edge and help maximize their educational experience at the university.”

Since the existing fitness center will be reconstructed, the new YMCA partnership will provide current traditional undergraduate students, as well as Averett faculty and staff, with a significantly decreased membership rate.
