The Staff Social is Tomorrow!

The staff social is tomorrow, Oct. 11, at 4:45 p.m. at Crema & Vine, 1009 Main St. Finger food will be provided by Staff Council. Crema & Vine is a Cougar Nation Discount Program business and that means all other purchases (coffee, soda, wine or beer) are 15 percent off. We hope to see you there!

Story Time for the Averett Community

Join the English and education students in ENG444 Literature for Children class this Friday, Oct. 12, from 2-2:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Blount Library. The students will be leading a story time for children of Averett faculty, staff and students. Each week will feature a different storybook reading of favorite fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel.

Flu Clinic

Flu clinic will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, and Thursday, Oct. 18, in the MPR. Please bring a copy of your health insurance card and photo id.

Open Horse Show, Bring the Kids!

The Equestrian Studies Department is hosting their fall semester open horse show this Sunday, Oct. 14. There will be a “leadline” class especially for children and grandchildren of Averett faculty and staff. Children will be led on Averett horses by equestrian students. They will be asked to perform movements and judged by our show official. There will be ribbons and prizes for all contestants. The cost is $5. Children should wear long pants and closed toe shoes. Helmets will be provided.

Take Back the Night

On Monday, Oct 29, from 5:30-8 p.m., Averett University is partnering with Haven of the Dan River Region for the “Take Back the Night” event. The mission of Take Back the Night is to create safe communities and respectful relationships through awareness building. We seek to end sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual abuse and all other forms of sexual violence.

Shuttles will be available from Main Campus to the Danville Courthouse from 5:30-6 p.m. The march will start at the Danville Courthouse at 6 p.m. and finish at Averett’s Student Center for a celebration from 7-8 p.m.

Harlem Globetrotters are Coming to Town

The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will be performing at the Grant Center on Averett’s North Campus on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at North Campus front office or by clicking here.

African & African American Studies Minor

REL/AFAM 306: African American Religions (TBA); ENG/WGS/AFAM 311: Caribbean Literature & Culture: Caribbean Woman (Muneal); NUR/AFAM 330: Cultural Care of the Client* (M. Lewis); SOC/AFAM 317: Race & Ethnicity (Brune); ENG/AFAM 399: Issues of Race in Southern Literature (Robeson).

Retirement Plan Changes

As we previously announced, Averett University has joined with 14 other member institutions from the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) to establish a single retirement plan called a 403(b) Multiple Employer Plan (MEP). We are very excited to let you know that Averett is in the next group of institutions to implement the MEP! Financial advisers from Millennium Advisory Services will be on campus this fall to hold group meetings to present important details about the MEP, including new investment options and enhanced services available to all employees.

New Master’s Programs Available

Averett’s Graduate and Professional Studies program is excited to announce two new master’s degree programs! These new programs include a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration and Leadership and Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics.

Samoilenko Publishes New Article

Dr. Sergey Samoilenko has published an article titled “A Data Analytic Benchmarking Methodology for Discovering Common Causal Structures that Describe Context-Diverse Heterogeneous Groups” in the journal Expert Systems with Applications. To read the full article, click here.

 

Swanson Joins the Averett Family

The Registrar’s Office is delighted to announce that Jude Swanson has been hired for the Record Specialist II position. Swanson is an Averett alum, ’14 and a graduate of Wake Forest University where he earned his Master’s of Divinity degree in 2018. Please stop by and welcome him!
