Clinical Coordinator, Graduate Programs

Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Graduate Programs (ADGP), the Clinical Coordinator will work with multiple clinical sites, preceptors and instructors to coordinate and manage clinical placements for MSN students, and maintain all associated data.  The position is a full-time 12-month appointment.  The successful candidate will be a registered nurse with strong marketing, recruitment and administrative skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.


  • Registered nurse with eligibility for Virginia licensure required
  • A BSN degree is required; an MSN is preferred
  • A minimum of five years of clinical experience as an RN
  • Minimum of one year teaching in an institution of higher learning or equivalent experience preferred
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet frequently occurring deadlines
  • Ability to develop a professional rapport with diverse school/campus constituents
  • Ability to develop and complete projects without continued direct supervision
  • Ability to perform within legal and ethical boundaries.
  • Leadership, program development and/or education experience preferred
  • Ability to effectively lead multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to be forward thinking and committed to preparing the next generation of advanced practice nurses for excellence in practice
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Above-average skills related to organization, attention to detail and effective time-management
  • Fluent in English
  • Excellent computer skills, including database management


  • Identifies, recruits and tours new clinical agency sites
  • Facilitates the development of contracts with new clinical sites according to Averett established guidelines
  • Collaborates with agency staff as well as Averett administration and staff to maintain currency in all contractual agreements
  • Identifies potential preceptors and faculty for the Assistant Dean
  • Maintains a list of the approved preceptors by clinical specialty
  • Maintains a positive presence in the healthcare arena in Virginia and the surrounding area, securing and coordinating clinical placement sites for incoming and continuing MSN students
  • Interacts with clinical agencies to plan for and schedule MSN student precepted rotations
  • Evaluates and files the clinical logs of MSN students
  • Conducts annual site visits and evaluations of all clinical sites
  • Attends all required meetings at clinical affiliation agencies
  • Attends community professional meetings and recruitment job fairs as needed
  • Schedules and notifies MSN students, clinical faculty and the clinical site regarding the clinical orientations for each student each semester
  • Prepares and provides orientation for all new MSN students, preceptors and clinical faculty
  • Maintains clinical clearance records on MSN students and preceptors and submits them to clinical agencies, including CPR verification, health clearances, background checks, and any required clinical training
  • Oversees the clinical evaluation process, which includes the site, the MSN clinical preceptors and the MSN students
  • Maintains all files and data related to clinical assignments
  • Schedules make-up clinical rotations for MSN students
  • Serves as a resource and support person for MSN clinical instructors, students and preceptors
  • Provides input into the evaluation process of MSN clinical instructors and preceptors
  • Manages MSN student clinical issues in collaboration with the ADGP
  • Facilitates the annual recognition of preceptors and friends of the MSN degree program
  • Facilitates the gathering and maintaining of MSN files with the necessary faculty, preceptor and clinical supervisor documents that are required for annual reports, grants, accreditation, and similar needs
  • Attends Graduate Program faculty meetings as requested
  • Attends residences for MSN students
  • Assists ADGP and faculty with planning and delivery of onsite residencies
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical & Mental Demands/Work Environment

The duties of this position require performance of the following activities and work in the described environment, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • High level ofinteraction with others requiring clear communication (speaking and listening) in person and telephonically
  • Visual and hearing acuity required to interact with persons and equipment
  • Frequent standing and walking, bending, or twisting, and occasionally sitting
  • Ability to lift, carry or move items of 10 pounds and up to 50 pounds, on rare occasions, such as equipment, supplies, and books
  • Must be able to handle items (paperwork, small equipment, tools)
  • Will need to use equipment such as telephones, printer, copier, fax, scanner, scissors, hole-punch, paper cutter, stapler, computer with Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Work uses fine manual dexterity to use equipment involving levers, buttons, keyboards, and switches such as medical equipment, computers, telephones
  • Frequent must work under time pressure, and perform tedious or exacting work, and be able to change tasks frequently
  • Must be able to work closely with others as part of a team and perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Occasionally work requires lifting/carrying, reaching, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, pushing/pulling, reaching, kneeling, or crouching
  • At times, rarely, may need to push/pull item, crawl, climb or balance (as step stool or small ladder), or operate foot pedals
  • On occasion may need to work an irregular schedule (evenings, weekends, or overtime)
  • On rare occasions may need to respond to emergency situations or work in a noisy or distracting environment
  • On rare occasions may be exposed to electrical or fire hazards and occasionally communicable diseases
  • Seasonally may experience conditions of respiratory hazards or wetness/humidity and occasionally noise and vibration in the work environment
  • Primary work location is in an office environment
