Qualifications

  • An earned Doctorate in education or related field
  • Proven record of teaching, research and scholarship, service, appropriate for an appointment to the faculty as a tenured professor
  • Teaching and administrative experience in education
  • At least three years leadership and administrative experience
  • Experience working with certification or boards, including VDOE, SACS, and CAEP
  • Demonstrated success in developing internal and external partnerships, with K-12 and other stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities

The Chair of the Professional Education Department supervises on-campus undergraduate and graduate programs which are on-campus and online. This Department offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the following endorsement areas: Elementary Education PK-6; Special Education General Curriculum PK-12; Administration and Supervision; Computer Science; Curriculum and Instruction; Driver Education, English, Mathematics, and History/Social Science 6-12; Reading Specialist; Health and Physical Education, Theater Arts, and Visual Arts PK-12.

Leadership and Management Responsibilities

The Chair will be responsible for the administration of all instructional programs, budgetary management, faculty development, evaluation and assessment of educational programs, and developing and maintaining high academic standards for the program.

The Chair also oversees student recruitment; evaluation; reappointment, promotion and tenure of education faculty; supports faculty development in teaching, scholarship, and research.

The Chair will supervise, document, and report results of program assessments, as well as work collaboratively with appropriate faculty in implementing and updating the long-range strategic vision and plan for the Department.

  • Use of telephone, computer keyboard, mouse, screen, software programs such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Creative Suite and other industry standard software
  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally (listening and speaking) and in writing to express and exchange ideas.
  • Ability to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels and receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; and operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to assemble, analyze and present data.
  • Work is typically performed inside with protection from weather, with some temperature change.

Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Position involves sitting for extended periods as well as walking to attend meetings and events.
