Marketing and Communications Specialist

Averett University, located in Danville, VA, seeks a well-organized professional to serve as the Marketing and Communications Specialist. This position reports to the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications and requires an energetic, self-directed individual who can thrive in a fast-paced office environment.

Marketing and Communications leads public information, strategic messaging and reputation management efforts across Averett. The office develops and executes strategic public relations programs that support the goals of Averett University. Services include news and public information, media and public relations, photography and video production, publication development, social media oversight, website management and emergency communications.

The Marketing and Communications Specialist will be responsible for the following:

Primary Duties

  • Compile, edit and distribute the university’s weekly event internal e-newsletters
  • Compile and edit the university’s monthly external e-newsletter
  • Manage university level social media accounts, and lead a university wide social media administrators committee
  • Contribute news stories and feature articles for university’s website and alumni magazine
  • Conduct effective media relations and proactively develop stories to pitch to media
  • Create and maintain targeted media lists in public relations software
  • Maintain marketing and communications measurements and evaluation
  • Work alongside Marketing and Communications Executive Director and Webmaster/Graphic Designer in enforcing university brand standards and guidelines, and developing a variety of marketing materials and publications
  • Provide crisis communications and issues management support, including serving on-call when needed
  • Attend meetings and participate on various university committees

Secondary Duties

  • Assist in strategic integrated marketing communications planning
  • Support advertising planning and write ad copy
  • Other duties as assigned

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or similar field required; Master’s degree in similar fields a plus
  • A minimum of three years of relevant public relations, marketing or journalism work experience
  • Experience in a higher education setting a plus
  • Demonstrated experience and results in effective media relations
  • Excellent writing and editing with working knowledge of Associated Press Style
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • Excellent organizational, written and communications skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and a variety of duties simultaneously
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to represent the university in a professional manner
  • Strong understanding of the mission and philosophy of a private, liberal arts university

Physical & Mental Demands/Work Environment

The duties of this position require performance of the following activities and work in the described environment, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Almost constant interaction with others requiring clear communication (speaking and listening) in person and telephonically
  • Must be able to work closely with others as part of a team
  • Visual and hearing acuity required to perform assigned work, including conducting meetings, interviews, and presentations as well as using interactive technology
  • Some work is performed while sitting although standing and walking are frequently necessary (programs, tours, events, etc.)
  • Ability to lift, carry or move items of up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 50 pounds,
  • At times, work may require pushing/pulling, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing (step ladder or stairs), crouching or use of foot pedals (driving)
  • Work uses fine manual dexterity to use equipment involving levers, buttons, keyboards, and switches as well as frequent handling of small items and paperwork
  • Must be able to change tasks frequently, work an irregular work schedule, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, work under time pressure, and work in a noisy or distracting environment
  • On occasion will need to perform tedious and exacting tasks
  • At times will need to use equipment such as telephones, printer, copier, scanner, camera, scissors, stapler, and computer.  Will use software including Microsoft Office, Foxit or Adobe PDF software, and others
  • Work environment regularly includes noise/vibration
  • Travel and attendance at events is required frequently within Danville and surrounding area
  • Work locations include an office environment and educational campus settings, both indoor and outdoor
