Averett University’s softball team, ranked 16th nationally by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), earned the top seed in this week’s USA South Conference Tournament after winning the league’s regular season championship. Averett will face No. 8 seed N.C. Wesleyan College to open the tournament Friday at 9 a.m. in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Averett (32-1-1, 22-1 USA South) has enjoyed its most successful season in program history, earning its first national ranking ever while finishing the regular season with a program-record 32 overall victories and a school-best 22 wins in the conference.
“This year’s tournament is going to be exciting,” Averett coach Bren Taylor said. “We know going in that everyone is back to a 0-0 record. We are going to have to play Averett ball against each opponent, starting first with N.C. Wesleyan. We have unfinished business from last year.
The top eight teams in the conference earned a spot in this year’s tournament, which begins Friday at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.
