Staff Accountant/Accounts Payable and Operations

This position reports to the Controller and supports the Business Office by providing general ledger management (unrestricted, temporarily restricted and restricted) accounting and reporting.



  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
  • Two (2) year’s accounting experience including accounts payable, general ledger and related subsidiary ledgers and reporting
  • Technology proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically EXCEL accounting software and related programs
  • Strong written and verbal skills, highly motivated, problem solver, energetic self-starter


  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
  • Five (5) year’s public accounting experience and/or Higher Education experience
  • Technology proficiency

Primary Responsibilities

General ledger (unrestricted, temporarily restricted, and permanently restricted)

  • Data entry for accounts payable
  • Data entry/maintenance of general ledger system (and third party system(s) as appropriate)
  • Bank reconciliations
  • Data entry for payroll system as needed
  • Corporate card reconciliation processing
  • General ledger accounting
  • Assist in preparation of annual Form 1099 returns and Notice B returns when necessary
  • Participation in University committees, focus groups, etc. as appropriate

Compliance includes, but is not limited to:

  • Research general ledger and related financial reporting matters as appropriate
  • Adherence to applicable federal, state and local laws, i.e. Form 1099
  • Adherence to applicable financial accounting and reporting standards, i.e. GAAP, FASB, DOE
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial quarterly reporting (in support of bank covenants)
  • Ensure accurate and timely Prepared By Client work papers and clean Financial audit
  • Ensure accurate and timely Prepared By Client work papers and clean Form 990 reporting

Physical & Mental Demands/Work Environment

The duties of this position require performance of the following activities and work in the described environment, with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Regular interaction with others requiring clear communication (speaking and listening) in person, electronically, and telephonically.Must be able to work with others as part of a team
  • Visual, speech, and hearing acuity required to perform assigned work, including in-person and online interactions with faculty members and staff and extensive computer work.
  • Most work is performed while sitting or standing
  • Work uses fine manual dexterity to use equipment involving levers, buttons, keyboards, and switches as well as frequent handling of small items and paperwork
  • Ability to lift, carry or move items of up to 10 pounds, occasionally, notes, files, binder
  • At times, work may require pushing/pulling (drawers, chairs), reaching, bending, twisting, or climbing (stairs)
  • Almost constantly will need to work under time pressure, work on multiple tasks simultaneously, perform tedious or exacting work.  At times may be called upon to make frequent changes of tasks, or work an irregular work schedule/overtime
  • Frequently will need to use office equipment such as telephones, printer, copier, scanner, scissors, stapler, and computer.  Will use software including Microsoft Office, Foxit or Adobe PDF software, Moodle or Canvas, Zoom, PC Self-Service, and financial systems.
  • Primary work location is an office environment
  • On rare occasions, travel within Danville, Virginia, may be required
