Dr. Lewis is in her 8th year at Averett. She is an Associate Professor in the Physical Education, Wellness & Sports Science Department and has served as the Program Director for the Athletic Training Program since May 2017. Prior to becoming the Program Director, Lewis served as the Clinical Education Coordinator.  Her primary teaching responsibilities include: Introduction to Athletic Training, Prevention of Athletic Injuries and Illnesses, Upper and Lower Extremity Evaluation, and Advanced Athletic Training-BOC Prep.

She is a graduate from Radford University where she earned a B.S. in Exercise, Sport & Health Education. Lewis earned her M.S. in Sports Studies from High Point University and PhD from Northcentral University in Education with a concentration in Sports Management.  She is married to Kenny Lewis Jr. The couple resides in Danville and are the parents of one boy and two girls.

Thomas Underwood, MS, LAT, ATC

Thomas Underwood was named Averett’s Head Athletic Trainer in July 2014 after serving as the Assistant Athletic Trainer since September 2011.  Underwood’s duties include overseeing the health and safety of the student-athletes participating in 16 NCAA sponsored sports along with the help of his 4 member staff.  In addition Underwood serves as the insurance coordinator for athletics, coordinates the university drug testing program, and serves as an adjunct professor with the physical education department here at Averett.

Prior to joining Averett’s Athletic Training Staff, Underwood worked at Guilford Orthopaedic Clinic in Greensboro, N.C. along with doing outreach with a local high school.

Underwood is a graduate of Averett University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Medicine (2008) and a Master’s of Business Administration (2014).  While an undergraduate at Averett, he worked with football, baseball and the men’s soccer team.  Underwood also had the opportunity to intern with the Green Bay Packers in the summer of 2008.

In November 2017, Underwood was awarded with the Excellence in Teaching Award from Averett’s chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success for his commitment to the growth of the University’s students.

Underwood currently resides in Danville with his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Colton and Collins.  In his free time Underwood enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid sports fan.
