Service Year Fellow – Pittsylvania County

Reports To: Director of Parks & Recreation or Designee

Summary of Position: This is a one-year, 29 hours/week, fellowship involving various duties that permit exposure to the fellow’s field along with successful completion of the fellow’s Service Year while providing experiences that are useful additions to the fellow’s education, and meaningful preparation for future professional employment.

Scope of Work: Under the supervision of Averett University and the Director of Parks and Recreation, the Service Year Fellow will be placed with the county’s six-year-old Parks and Recreation department. Given the vast growth in the department and its facilities in the last six years, the department has needs within the marketing and advertising fields as well as data collection and research that would include its new recreation center and recently built parks. Specific tasks would include developing and implementing a marketing and advertising plan for the new recreation center and the Ringgold Rail Trail, data collection and analysis of community usage of the four new parks in the county and possible involvement in the updating of the Parks and Recreation comprehensive master plan.

Community outreach will include identifying the needs of citizens in relation to Pittsylvania County resources; developing informational materials in order to educate citizens on how to obtain access to necessary resources and services; identify methods to create more transparency of how Pittsylvania County serves citizens. The Service Year Fellow will be held to the following expectations of Pittsylvania County Parks & Recreation:

  •  Become timely acquainted with the County structure, policies, etc.
  •  Attend assigned meetings and make reports as necessary;
  •  Ability to create presentations and marketing materials;
  •  Communicate with supervisor when unclear on matters;
  •  Consult with Averett University advisor and Director of Parks & Recreation when problems arise;
  •  Dress appropriately; display professionalism at all times;
  •  Good work ethic with positive attitude;
  •  Displays confidentiality when required;
  •  Ability to plan and coordinate events; interact with public;
  •  Ability to interpret and apply analytical and logical concepts;
  •  Efficient with computer software applications, Internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat and social media.

Qualifications: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or recent graduate of Averett University.
