PHYSICAL SCIENCES (CH, PSC)

A knowledge of the physical sciences is essential for the study of many disciplines, such as molecular biology, environmental science, medicine, pharmacy, and physiology, to name a few. As a result, the goal of the physical sciences department is to offer a program that will thoroughly educate students to be competent in the fields of chemistry and physics. Through a rigorous program of study, students will develop critical thinking and creative problem solving skills that are essential in the study of the natural sciences and other related disciplines.

In conjunction with the department of biological sciences, the concentration in Biology/Chemistry is offered. This program of study may open doors to graduate studies in fields such as biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, toxicology, and other health-related sciences. It may also afford opportunities for entry into diverse professional programs, such as dental, medical, pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary schools. In addition, the concentration in Biology/Chemistry may provide many career opportunities, such as positions in academic or industrial laboratories conducting research, or in chemical, medical, or pharmaceutical sales.

Students in the Biology/Chemistry concentration must attain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 for all major courses taken at Averett University in order to graduate. These major courses include the ones required for the concentration, as well as electives completed in the departments of biological and physical sciences.
