Lesley Villarose, Dean of Students at Averett University, grew up in Rockville, MD. She attended Lynchburg College and received a bachelor of arts in communications with an emphasis on journalism. After graduating from Lynchburg College in 2002 she moved to Philadelphia, PA where she attended Temple University and received her master’s in educational administration.

During her time in Philadelphia she worked at three institutions and served in various positions in student affairs that included student activities, recreation services, conference services and student union operations and conduct.

Lesley is currently in her sixth year at Averett University. Previously she served as the Director of Student Engagement. She, her husband Michael and their daughter Lexi reside in Eden, NC. Lesley serves on the alumni board for Lynchburg College as the chair of the student engagement committee.

Tammy lives in South Boston, VA with her husband, Michael, two sons– Malik and Mekhi, and her niece, Tylisia. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in 2004 in Organizational Management and Development from Bluefield College and her MBA from Averett University in 2008. She is the Student Life Operations Coordinator in the Dean of Students Office with Dean Villarose. Tammy has worked in college education for over sixteen years in areas such as admissions, advising, registration, business, and financial aid. She enjoys walking, binge watching television, classic literature and movies, and planting flowers. She is a student advocate who is passionate about seeing all students set and achieve their goals.

Jill Adams joined the Averett family in September 2016. Before coming to Averett University, she served as the Director of Student Health Programming at Ferrum College.  Jill holds a B.S. from Bluefield College and a Master’s in Health and Wellness from Liberty University.  She has 3 children and resides in the Danville area with her husband.

Williane “Ann” Charles graduated in May of 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Minor in Health Education from Longwood University. She was recently hired as the Graduate Assistant for the Office of Health and Wellness as she continues to pursue her education to earn a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Leadership. While at Longwood University, she was highly involved on-campus. She worked in several offices, including Residential & Commuter Life, Citizen Leadership and Social Justice Education, Office of First Year Experience and Family Programs, and she is a brother of Alpha Phi Omega. She enjoys mentoring students, volunteering, attending concerts, crafting, and spending time with her family and friends.

Kennsel Anderson is from Richmond, VA and is a recent graduate of Ferrum College. He received a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance with a concentration in health promotion in the spring of 2017. While attending Ferrum, he was an active leader on campus as a resident assistant for two years, part of the football team for three years, on the SGA public relations committee, the president of the Black Student Union, and president for the Brother4Brother mentoring program. He was recently hired in the Health & Wellness office as a graduate assistant where he will focus on health related programming for the students. While working as a graduate assistant, he will also be pursuing a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing. He enjoys fitness, sports, reading, and actively participating in community service.

Kyle Patterson

Kyle has served in the Office of Housing and Residence Life at Averett University since 2012. He serves as the Director of Housing & Residence Life. Patterson received his Master of Education degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg.

Kyle has served in Housing & Residence Life through multiple roles since 2006. Most recently prior to Averett, at Catawba College as an Area Coordinator. His mission is to provide equitable opportunities for all students, and foster a supportive home like living learning environment. His long-term professional aspiration is to become a chief Student Affairs Officer.

Kyle was raised in the Tampa Bay area of Florida where he developed a love for sports and the beach. He enjoys spending time with his family, exercising regularly, and traveling.

Jawoin graduated from Averett University in Fall ’16 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science and is currently a candidate in the MBA program. He works in the department of Housing and Residence Life as a Graduate Hall Director. Guided by his core belief of students come first, he strives to empower everyone around him. William’s energy motivates others to do great things. Through his work he has proven to be a catalyst for positive change.

Christopher graduated in December of 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Management.  He was recently hired as a Graduate Assistant for the Office of Housing and Residence Life as he continues to pursue his education to earn a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Leadership.  He is 22 years old and from Hampton, Virginia.  Christopher was highly involved as a student as he served as a Resident Assistant, Student Ambassador, and Writing Consultant. He is passionate about the aviation industry and his hobbies include physical fitness, traveling, investment strategies, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Shelbilyn recently graduated from Winston-Salem State University in the spring of 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and is currently a candidate in the MBA program at Averett University. She is from King, North Carolina and joined the department of Housing and Residence Life as a Graduate Hall Director in July 2017. She finds value in music and helping others realize their full potential. Shelbilyn’s passion for working with others has allowed her to develop strong leadership skills throughout her college career in the WSSU music department.

While attending Ferrum, he was an active leader on campus as he was a part of the football team for three years, the Treasurer of the Black Student Union, the Vice President for the Brother4Brother mentoring program, and a Resident Assistant. He was recently hired in the Office of Housing and Residence Life as a graduate assistant where he will focus on diversity and inclusion related programming for the students. While working as a graduate assistant he will also be pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management.

Joan Kahwajy-Anderson is a Licensed Professional Counselor with more than twenty-five years of counseling experience. She assists students in finding resources to resolve typical, developmental issues experienced by many college students. Through the Office of Wellness and Peer Education, students usually meet one to one with Ms. Kahwajy-Anderson, with couple or group sessions offered as needed. Typical issues discussed include adjustment to university life, academic or personal stress, relationship issues and sadness or grief. Services of the center are intended to help students achieve their personal and academic goals in a confidential and respectful manner. Helping students develop emotionally healthy and successful lives is the primary mission of the Office for Wellness and Peer Education.

Cecilia graduated from Old Dominion University in December 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications. She was recently hired as a Graduate Assistant for the Office of Wellness Counseling and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. During her undergraduate career, she interned for the Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia and served as a Small Group Facilitator and Service Co-Chair in her faith ministry at ODU. Cecilia has lived in Virginia for the last 10 years, but calls Texas her home. Her passions include painting, photography, reading dystopian novels, and feature writing.

Skyler Daniel is from Knoxville, TN, and he and his wife Ronella are blessed with a little girl, Charlize.  Skyler holds a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Lee University, and a Master’s of Divinity from Wake Forest University.  Half his time is shared with West Main Baptist Church where he serves as Associate Pastor for Youth.  Before coming to Averett, Skyler ministered to marginalized students in Romania, and served various ministry roles before that.

Sierra Braxton-Sears graduated from Averett in 2013 earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a concentration in communications. While at Averett, she was highly involved in on-campus departments and activities such as admissions, working as an orientation leader for several years, as well as, being the head orientation leader for a year, serving as a Cougar Activities Board member, and working as a building manager. She is currently the Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Leadership Development here at Averett University. She has a husband, Jamison, and a daughter, Sophia. She enjoys spending time with her family and working to develop young student leaders.

Taylor Mahaffey is from Belmont, NC and graduated in May of 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing management. She was hired as a graduate assistant for the office of student engagement and leadership development in the fall of 2015. She is currently pursuing her education to earn a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in leadership. Taylor was a four-year softball player here at Averett, and a three-year captain on the team. She was also highly involved as a student as she served as an orientation leader, a peer instructor, a member of the student athletic advisory committee, and a sister in the Kappa Delta Alpha sorority. She enjoys traveling, shopping, and spending time with her friends and family.

Jamal Forney is from Lexington, NC and graduated from Averett University in the spring of 2017. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in marketing. He was recently hired as a graduate assistant in the office of student engagement and leadership development while pursuing his education to receive a master’s in business administration with a concentration in marketing. Jamal played football for four years while at Averett. He was also inducted into the National Society of Leadership Success and served on the building manager staff. He is excited for the opportunity to help leaders grow and be a catalyst for positive change.

Jamie Walker graduated from Averett University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He graduated from DCC in 1997 with an Associate degree in Criminal Justice. Jamie has been with Averett University Security Department since 2004 and was promoted to Director of Security in 2007. This title was later changed to Chief of Campus Safety and Security. Jamie has over 15 years in campus security and law enforcement experience. Jamie and his wife Gena reside in Danville, VA.
