Averett University Statement on a Recommended Immunization

Meningococcal Meningitis

The Center for Disease Control and Averett University recommend the meningococcal meningitis vaccination for students living in residence halls to reduce disease risk. College students living in close quarters are at higher risk for Meningococcal disease compared with peers the same age who are not attending college.

Meningococcal disease, which often begins with symptoms that can be mistaken for common illnesses, such as the flu, is dangerous because it progresses rapidly. It infects 3,000 Americans each year, kills 11% of those infected, and, among survivors, up to 15% may suffer long-term permanent disabilities.
