Week of January 18th – 29th: Individuals will sign up for a 30-minute time slot on the door of the Office of Student Engagement.

Notification of Employment:

The 2016 OLs will be notified by email or postal mailing by February 5th.

Orientation Leader (OL) Job Description

The Orientation Leader will work with various members of the Averett community during the 2015 Orientation program. The OL plays a vital role in helping new students and their families matriculate into the Cougar community.


  • Be at all meetings and/or training no exceptions (unless otherwise discussed upon being hired and not after)
  • Interact with new students through small group sessions, icebreakers, and other activities
  • Be a resource for new students and their families
  • Assist with the logistical details (i.e. set up and break down) of the program
  • Assist with supervision of new students in the residence hall during Orientation
  • Participate in all other orientation functions
  • Represent AU and the Cougar community
  • Assist admissions with occasional open houses during the spring 2015
  • Assist with Fall Opening events in the fall of 2016


  • Be reliable, punctual, energetic, responsible, flexible, and collaborative, demonstrate strong verbal communication skills, and be a team player
  • Must be enrolled at AU in the fall of 2016
  • Be in good academic and disciplinary standing
  • Must be available for training and employment during the entire Orientation period


  • Must abide by University and State policies regarding alcohol and other drug use at all times
  • Must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times
  • Must sign and abide by the rules of a behavior contract for the Orientation period

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Excellent leadership opportunity
  • OL’s will be paid for a portion of their time with the program – total compensation is dependent upon meals, housing and others.
  • Meals will be provided during training and Orientation. If you will be living on campus during the fall semester, you will be provided housing on campus during this period as well.
  • Staff shirts will be provided

Employee Status:

Beginning February 2016 and ending after Opening Convocation, Orientation Leaders are employees of the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership Development. Orientation Leaders will follow the supervision and direction of the SELD staff. During this time, students are expected to maintain their good academic standing, as well as judicial standing. If, during this time, Orientation Leader’s GPA’s drop below a 2.0 or falls out of good disciplinarian standing, employment will be terminated.
