The following arts groups from Averett perform or participate in Arts@Averett events:
The Averett Theatre Players
The Averett Theatre Players have a long history of delighting audiences of all ages. The Players typically offer three to four productions each year including a children’s show and a musical. Past performances include: “Children of Eden,” “Medea,” “Our Town,” “The Mousetrap,” “Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged)” and “Once on This Island.”
Theatre for Young People Series
Each year Averett’s Theatre for Young People Series introduces hundreds of school kids to the joys of live theatre. When Averett’s Theatre Players interact with their young audience members the result is magical! Past Theatre for Young People Series productions include: “Schoolhouse Rock Live!,” “Seussical the Musical” and “Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.”
The Averett Singers
The Averett Singers delight audiences throughout the community and the region.
Their vast musical repertoire ranges from “Te Deum” by Mozart to “How Can I Keep From Singing” to “Erev Shel Shoshamim” (Evening of Roses), an Israeli folksong that is sung in Hebrew.
Special performance tours have included: Florida, Delaware, North Carolina, New York City and New Orleans.
Symphonic Band and Instrumental Music
Instrumental music is thriving at Averett. Our largest ensemble (music majors and those who simply want to keep playing their instruments are welcome) is the Averett Symphonic Band, but we also do smaller groups such as pep band, rock band, or jazz ensemble. Students can take private lessons on just about any instrument they have an interest in from winds to keyboard, guitar, or percussion. We offer an instrumental music education degree with initial teacher licensure as well. At an Averett Band concert, you may hear anything from hit songs to movie and Broadway music to some of the top composers in band music today, such as John Mackey or Julie Giroux.
Art Department
Students in Averett’s art program are exposed to a range of studio work. Rather than concentrating on a single studio area, they build a balanced background in the visual arts. Art majors exhibit their work at the university’s annual spring art show, which is part of Arts@Averett. Students also hold individual shows at various locations around campus in the fall. We warmly invite you to come see their work!
