Averett’s Leadership Studies

Averett offers an interdisciplinary minor of eighteen hours in leadership studies. At its core is a series of courses that blend the theoretical consideration of leadership with practical leadership experience. The curriculum of this minor also includes course offerings from various departments and utilizes the talents of faculty, staff and administration in an effort to build the leadership expertise of students.

Leadership Opportunities

Averett Student Ambassadors: Student Ambassadors work as campus tour guides and lunch hosts for prospective students and their families when they visit Averett.   Student Ambassadors are a select group of special students chosen by the AU Admissions Office.

Student Government Association: Working with SGA, the voice of the student body, is a great way to get involved on campus. Each spring students elect the SGA Executive Board members & Senators who will represent them in the coming year. In addition to working with campus governance, SGA sponsors multiple events on campus during the year. Election packets are made available at the beginning of each semester. Orientation Leader: New Student Orientation is an extremely fun experience for our new freshmen and transfer students. Our Orientation Leaders work very closely with incoming freshman to help navigate, assist, and prepare them for their first-year experience. OL’s are hired during the fall and are required to take LDR 299 during the spring semester. More information can be found by contacting the Office of Student Activities.

IDS 101 Peer Leader: Interested in teaching or helping out new freshmen? If so, then working with the IDS program is just for you. All new freshmen are required to take IDS 101 during their first semester at AU. These courses are taught by an AU staff or faculty member and an upperclassman student and help to prepare students for the next four years at AU. IDS 101 Peer Leaders are hired during the fall and are required to take LDR 299 during the spring semester. More information can be found by contacting the Office of Student Activities.

Resident Assistants: Resident assistants are student leaders who live on individual residence hall floors. They are selected via an interview and application. Interested students can contact Residence Life.
