Parks and Rec Points

Danville Parks and Recreation provides outdoor program opportunities throughout the summer. Employees enrolled in the wellness program can receive points for participating in kayaking, hiking, ropes courses and paddle boarding activities. Points for these activities will be rewarded after attesting to participation through the wellness portal- located in the “Course Categories” drop-down menu on the main dashboard under “Custom Programs.” More information will be coming regarding how fitness classes provided can be worth points, too!

Click here for a full list of Danville Parks and Recreation outdoor summer activities. The wellness portal can be accessed by clicking here. If you have any questions, please contact Dana Dominguez at [email protected].

After 10 years of admissions recruitment, Jillian Gourley’s last day at Averett will be Thursday, June 27. During her time at Averett, Jillian has served on numerous committees and presented at professional conferences. Jillian loves Averett, and her commitment to the families/students she worked with was why she was so successful.

During her 10 years in admissions, she dramatically increased the number of students from North Carolina. Her enthusiasm and passion will greatly be missed. The admissions team is sad to see her leave; however, we know that she will be successful in her next steps. Thank you Jillian for your service to Averett University.

New Faculty Fellows

The CCECC started its inaugural Faculty Fellowship in Service-Learning with a week-long workshop with some of the best and brightest faculty in the Dan River Region. A strong cohort of service-learning champions at Averett, Piedmont Community College and Danville Community College are poised to offer seven brand new service-learning classes as part of our ongoing community engagement efforts. We ended the week serving at the Salvation Army. Please join us in congratulating Laura Hartman, Melanie Lewis, Stephanie Smith, April Love-Loveless and Tia Yancey as Averett’s newest service-learning faculty.

For more information on how to become part of the Faculty Fellowship in Service-Learning, the Faculty Fellowship in Career Development and/or the Faculty Fellowship in Bonner Leadership, please contact Dr. Billy Wooten at [email protected].

Golden Bagel

Congratulations to Donna Schweiger, the June recipient of the Golden Bagel Award!

Here is what Donn’a co-workers had to say about her:

“I would like to nominate Donna Schweiger for the Golden Bagel award. Donna puts great effort into keeping up with everyone’s birthdays and sending around birthday cards. She keeps a special tin of chocolate in her desk that she often brings around in the afternoon and during the summer, she provides us with ice cream treats. We get Valentine hearts to fill with candy in February and Halloween snacks in October. Her caring nature helps to keep us bound together as a team. She is never flustered or in a bad mood and will go above and beyond to help in any situation. She definitely deserves to be recognized!”

“I’d like to nominate Donna Schweiger for this month’s Golden Bagel award. Donna does anything and everything that’s asked of her and more in her job as well as within our GPS team. She is always willing to lend a hand no matter the situation and does it graciously with a smile. She’s the first to recognize and praise someone’s accomplishments, give encouragement when we’re down, makes sure we’re all remembered with cards on our birthday, and even passes out candy and ice cream as a pick-me-up treat. She’s one of the kindest, most passionate people I’ve ever known and I’m honored to call her my co-worker and friend.  She has a true giving spirit and is loyal to the end. There will never be another Donna!”

GPS Student Spotlight

Meet Quitin Ellis, a student pursuing his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, expected to graduate in 2022. To read more about Quitin on the GPS blog, click here.

Why did you choose Averett’s GPS program?

“I had started taking classes in the past but never finished. I know this time will be different and I know I will finish. I am hoping this degree will give me the knowledge that I can put in place to assist me and my wife in making our businesses successful.”
